WRITERS' ROOM Q&A: SCOTT RYAN
Scott Ryan is the writer and star of the standout FX series, Mr InBetween, which won him AACTA and Logie awards. His debut film, The Magician, which he wrote, directed and starred in, won three awards, including Best Film, at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival.
Who are you heroes in writing?
Heroes? Writers? I don't know if I would consider any writer to be a hero but writers I admire are guys like Paddy Chayefsky, Billy Wilder, Woody Allen and Quentin Tarantino.
Favourite piece of screen dialogue?
What an impossible question to answer. I love a lot of the Bogart, Bacall dialogue from the movies they did together but there's really too many examples of great dialogue to pick one above all others.
Best excuse you’ve used (or heard used) for missing a deadline?
Never missed a deadline and to be honest I don't know anybody who has because I don't hang out with other writers.
Worst note you’ve ever received?
The script is great.
What song best represents your career?
To Beat the Devil by Kris Kristofferson
Favourite cinema hero and villain?
Now I figure that you're asking for two names here but my favorite Hero is actually the Villain for 99% of the movie. Roy Batty in Bladerunner. In his last moments on screen he switches roles, villain to hero.
If not a writer, what would you be?
If not a writer what would I be? Probably dead. I know this isn't the answer you're looking for but.....
